Types of Steel Materials

As the backbone of heavy equipment tools, household items, and other items, steel plays a significant role in the construction and manufacturing. Steel is not created equal. The type of steel that you select can have a profound impact on the durability and strength of a construction project.

The amount of impurities and/or additions determines the classification. This is what acoustically and thermally insulated modular steel cells makes each one distinct for specific applications.

Low-carbon steels, which are offered in a variety of forms are the most widely used steels by metal fabricators. They are found in beams, pipes, and other structural components. They’re also great for welding fabrications due to their ability to be easily shaped and formed without compromising its strength or quality.

The medium carbon steels are known for being hard and have a carbon content of less than 1.75 percent. They’re the best choice for knives, cookware, and other durable tools. They’re also used to make car parts and other mechanical equipment.

High-carbon steels have more than 1.7 percent carbon and are often used for components that require exceptional strength and resistance to corrosion. This includes anchor bolts, tools and rods.

Alloy steels can be used in a variety of ways and can be tailored to meet the needs of any use. For instance, tungsten is able to increase the temperature strength and wear resistance of high-strength steels. Chromium improves the heat resistance of stainless steels and increases their ductility. Molybdenum on is the other hand, increases the toughness and hardness of alloy steels.
